Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called out former FBI Director James Comey, accusing him of doing “tremendous damage to the country” while looking out for his life after government service.

Rubio accused Comey, along with other government leaders, of “going woke” before leaving government service in order to monetize their work, paving the way for book deals and speaker circuits.

“You get to the end of your government service, and you realize — everyone tells you, it’s obvious, ‘You want to be on corporate boards, you want to be on the speaker circuit, you want to sell books and be invited, you want to be an analyst on some of these news stations, you have to do things, you have to act a certain way. There are things we need you to do on your way out to cleanse yourself and be put on there as an expert,’” Rubio told Jesse Watters Primetime.

“That’s why over and over again you see people doing that, whether it’s generals about to retire going woke, or whether it’s FBI directors. This is how you get hired. This is how you get money,” Rubio continued. “This is how you can monetize your previous government service is by becoming a voice that uses your previous service to give you the credibility and the standing to go on these shows and sell your book, or be on a corporate board or be on a speaker circuit, but it’s doing tremendous damage to the country and tremendous damage to these institutions.”

Rubio added that in today’s political climate, the “next payday” requires leaders, such as Comey, to go against conservatives.

“You got a leadership of people, who have historically, not just there but in other agencies, that are looking for the next payday when they leave government service, and to do that, you got to be invited to the right parties and be invited to be a member of polite society and to do that you have to be anti-Republican, especially anti-Trump,” Rubio said.

Comey has set out on a media tour to promote his new novel, Central Park West: A Crime Novel.

While speaking with CNN This Morning host Poppy Harlow on Wednesday, Comey said he had no regrets regarding his handling of the Trump-Russia probe, despite the findings of the Durham Report.

“No,” Comey told Harlow, affirming he had no regrets. “And there’s nothing new in his report about the FBI. He thinks it ought’ve been a prelim investigation and not a full, and the differences would be boring to your listeners and your viewers.”

Comey also insisted that the notion of the FBI targeting Republicans and conservatives is “crazy.”
