South Korea has formally ended a ban on the import of full-body sex dolls, ending years of debate over how much the government can interfere in private life. Although there are no laws or regulations banning the import of sex dolls, hundreds and perhaps thousands have been seized by the customs, which cited a clause in the law that bans the import of goods that “harm the country’s beautiful traditions and public moral.” (Lee Jong-chul/Newsis via AP) AP

Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin are pushing legislation to criminalize child sex dolls.

Under a proposal announced on Monday, possession of a child sex doll would be deemed a felony offense in the state, according to a report.

State Rep. Joy Goeben and state Sen. Jesse James are at the forefront of the push, and their bill defines a child sex doll as any doll, mannequin, or robot that anatomically resembles a minor and is used for sexual purposes.

These items are “horrifying,” Goeben said. “It’s really scary that this is something that exists and it’s being used against our children. We need to stop that. We need to protect our kids.”

Those caught in possession of a child sex doll would face a felony charge that carries a sentence of up to 3 1/2 years in prison, and a first offender in possession of three or more dolls faces a possible six-year sentence, the report noted.

The latter is also the punishment for second-time offenders.

A third offense and any further number would send an individual away for up to 10 years.

Even more serious punishments would be in place if the child sex doll resembles a specific minor, with those convicted facing up to 15 years for their first offense and up to 25 years for further offenses, according to the report.

If a person in possession of a child sex doll has already been convicted of a child sex crime, they would be subject to six years upon their first offense.

Goeben believes that the dolls are used by pedophiles and can lead to assaults, with James sharing the sentiment that they may serve as a gateway to more heinous crimes.

“They’re to serve a purpose that may temporarily, in my opinion, satisfy the sexual urges,” he said. “However, I think that nothing ever replaces the real thing. (The child sex dolls are) a temporary fix.”

Similar legislation to that proposed in Wisconsin can be seen being pushed by Republican lawmakers throughout the nation, but the child sex dolls do appear to have some defenders.

The Prostasia Foundation criticized bans against the dolls as an unconstitutional invasion of privacy, according to the report.

According to the foundation, they act as a harmless outlet for those attracted to children, which can prevent actual sexual assaults.

“Don’t let emotional scare tactics win out over sound science,” the foundation said in response to a ban in South Dakota.
