Democratic Rep. Don Davis wins reelection battle against Laurie Buckhout

.

North Carolina Democrat Don Davis won reelection in the state’s redrawn 1st Congressional District, beating Republican Laurie Buckhout in a rematch of their 2024 contest.

The Associated Press called the 1st District for Davis on Thursday afternoon.

Davis, an Air Force veteran, was one of the most vulnerable House Democrats seeking reelection this midterm election cycle. The Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature redrew his district to make it more Republican-friendly. In the redraw, Davis lost many Democratic-friendly and majority-black counties in exchange for more of the North Carolina coast. Under the old lines, President Donald Trump won the seat by 3 points against then-Vice President Kamala in 2024. Under the new lines, Trump would have won the district by 11 points.

Buckhout, an Army veteran, previously lost to Davis in 2024 by less than 2 points under the old district lines.

In the lead-up to Election Day, several high-profile Republicans descended on the Tar Heel State to boost Buckhout’s campaign. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Vice President JD Vance both campaigned with her in October and branded Davis as part of the socialist sweep that has overtaken the Democratic Party. Trump also campaigned with Buckhout in Greenville, North Carolina.

“We know what the far-left Democrats like Don Davis stand for. They stand for the idea that your government exists for fraudsters, for criminals, for legal aliens,” Vance said while speaking in Hendersonville, North Carolina, in October.

The prediction market Kalshi suspended Buckhout from its platform for three years in late August after she wagered on her race. “It was a dumb mistake,” Buckhout said about the incident.

Davis vastly outraised Buckhout in the last quarter before the midterm elections, bringing in $1.3 million to Buckhout’s $628,000.
