Federal law enforcement is investigating a Border Patrol-involved shooting in Laredo, Texas, that took place after an agent was assaulted early Monday morning, according to a new report.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson in Laredo confirmed Monday that a fatal shooting had occurred around 2:45 a.m. local time when a Border Patrol agent was attacked by a man, according to local news outlet KGNS.
CBP spokeswoman Sara Melendez did not clarify who the deceased individual was, what led to the assault, and who opened fire. The federal agency has also not released information about the immigration status of anyone involved or if the incident occurred off-duty or during an immigration enforcement operation.
As of mid-Monday, Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety personnel were reportedly still on the scene with a crashed vehicle. If a weapon was discharged by a Border Patrol agent, the FBI will be called in to investigate the incident, as is normal protocol.
