The 27-year-old man accused of destroying the Iwo Jima statue in Quantico, Virginia, with a sledgehammer was granted bond by a circuit court judge on Monday.

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 21, after the Prince William Police Department said officers caught him using a sledgehammer to smash the statue. One soldier on the monument had been decapitated, its head lying on the grass.

Maldonado Soriano was charged with felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument.

A detective told the court Monday that Maldonado Soriano showed signs of mental health issues, according to NBC4. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also had issued a detainer on the man because he was not a green card holder, despite living in Stafford County since he was 1 year old, the outlet reported.

Maldonado Soriano was granted bond and ordered to be on GPS monitoring, according to NBC4. His preliminary hearing has been set for January.
