Anthropic files IPO to take company public

.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic filed paperwork Monday to go public, setting the stage for what could become one of the largest initial public offerings in history as Wall Street prepares to invest in one of the industry’s biggest players.

The San Francisco-based company, known for its Claude AI chatbot, submitted a registration statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission outlining plans to list its shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT.

Anthropic has not disclosed how many shares it intends to sell or the anticipated price range. The company could begin trading as early as November, although the timeline remains subject to regulatory approval and market conditions.

The Claude maker initially filed preliminary paperwork to go public in June, allowing regulators to review its financial information before the company publicly disclosed its plans.

The company’s rapid growth has come alongside mounting expenses as it competes with rival OpenAI to develop increasingly sophisticated AI models.

According to the filing, Anthropic earned roughly $16.3 billion in the first six months of 2026 but also reported its largest net loss of $80.75 billion in the same time frame, meaning the company has not yet earned a profit.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, including CEO Dario Amodei and President Daniela Amodei, his sister. It has since emerged as one of OpenAI’s leading competitors, attracting major investors and expanding its presence among business customers.

The IPO announcement comes roughly a week after the company announced it plans to disburse a small percentage of its stock to a “Public Benefit Fund,” citing a need for “bolder approaches” to alleviating concerns that AI could “cause instability for many workers.”

The fund announcement followed significant backlash to the AI industry, partly fueled by Dario Amodei’s significant thought-leadership essay in mid-September calling for stronger guardrails on the pace of the technology’s development.

Anthropic’s market debut would follow the blockbuster June IPO of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which raised nearly $86 billion and set a record for the largest public stock offering.

The timing of Anthropic’s IPO is significant, as it comes shortly after Musk’s announcement and would likely deter OpenAI from making a similar move because investors may not want to put all of their eggs in the tech industry’s basket.
