President Donald Trump distanced himself from former U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle after the White House asked the one-time Fox News personality, who used to date Trump’s eldest son, to resign from her post on Tuesday.
“She wasn’t a member of my family,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn. “I guess she just dated my son a long time ago.”
Guilfoyle was with Donald Trump Jr. for six years before the couple broke up in late 2024; they got engaged in 2020. Donald Trump Jr. married Florida socialite Bettina Anderson this year, attracting his own controversy for permitting a Russian oligarch to hold a party in the pair’s honor.
Trump added that Guilfoyle had been “doing a good job” as his top diplomat to Greece, but that he “didn’t like what we were reading.”
“I didn’t speak to her, no, but she will not be there,” he said. “I didn’t like what I read.”
New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced earlier Tuesday that the Trump administration had asked Guilfoyle to resign amid allegations of misconduct, including asking a Republican donor to pay her $100,000 American Express credit card bill and for accepting gifts and providing access to energy executives.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zacharia told reporters during her first press briefing. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
Shortly afterward, Guilfoyle took to social media to contend that “these allegations are false,” indicating her intention to “vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.”
“I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional,” Guilfoyle wrote. “I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.”
She added, “My gratitude and respect for President Trump and Secretary [Marco] Rubio remain unwavering. I am proud of what we accomplished together, and I will always be a loyal supporter of President Trump and his mission to Make America Great Again.”

Guilfoyle was previously married to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
