Rapper Soulja Boy teased a run for president in 2028, saying “the future starts with a conversation.”
Although midterm elections are not yet over, voters and politicians have already set their sights on potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election. On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are the current frontrunners. Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are early names floated for the Democratic Party.
However, Soulja Boy’s announcement hints at a potentially more untraditional candidate pool. In an Instagram post, the rapper said he planned to focus on four things: Economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, education, and the future of technology and artificial intelligence.
“A new chapter,” the post reads. “A bigger version. A commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation.”
The “Crank That” rapper didn’t state which political party he’d represent, or announce an official bid. Soulja Boy wouldn’t be the first rapper to run for the Oval Office. Ye, formerly Kanye West, ran for president in 2020.
HOW 2028 CONTENDERS ARE BOOSTING THEIR BONA FIDES DURING MIDTERM SEASON
Soulja Boy performed at President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration festivities at the first crypto inauguration ball, featuring a collaboration between Crypto.com, Kraken, and Exodus. The event wasn’t an official inaugural event, and Trump wasn’t in attendance.
“From music to business to technology, I’ve always believed in thinking bigger and challenging what’s possible,” Soulja Boy wrote. “Now I’m exploring what it means to bring that same vision to public service.”
