2028 Democratic contenders to meet following the midterm election to discuss direction of the party

A slate of 2028 Democratic presidential contenders is set to gather in Denver following the midterm elections to discuss the party’s future.

The group will reportedly include former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and former Chicago Mayor and Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, along with multiple senators, including Sens. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI). Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) are also set to speak, as well as some members of Congress, at the event hosted by Majority Democrats, a group “committed to reshaping and growing the Democratic Party so that it can compete everywhere.”

The Democrats set to appear at the conference have spent the last two years expanding their national profiles ahead of possible 2028 presidential bids. Many have been on the stump for battleground candidates and traveled to the early-voting states on the Democratic presidential nominating calendar.

“This isn’t a policy conference nor a talk shop on tactics,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA), Majority Democrats chairman, said in a statement to CNN, which reported the confab. “What’s next is timed for a unique moment after the midterms and before the presidential to debate a vision for the Democratic Party. Politicians who believe they have that vision should be on that stage.”

The mood of the conference could hinge on the outcome of the November elections, in which Democrats are in a poll position to flip the House and are increasingly competitive on the Senate battlefield. The results could strip nearly all of President Donald Trump’s power over Capitol Hill for the final two years of his presidency.

The meeting in Denver comes after the city was included in a short list released by Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin earlier this year as a possible site for the 2028 Democratic National Convention. Boston and Philadelphia were also on the list.
