A 57-year-old man was killed after a shopping bag became trapped in the doors of a New York City subway train, dragging him onto the tracks as the train pulled away from a Brooklyn station, police said.
Police said Yaw Boahene, of Brooklyn, was exiting the train around 6 p.m. Monday when his bag got caught in the closing doors. He was then pulled onto the tracks and run over as the train departed the station.
Officers responding to the incident found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to NBC 4 New York, video footage shows a man holding a cane and the bag that was eventually caught. Once the doors closed on his bag, Boahene then tries to free his belongings as he is dragged with the departing train, eventually hitting the wall and rolling onto the tracks.
The outlet said police are also investigating whether Boahene’s foot was caught between the train and the platform during the incident.
Police said no criminality is suspected. The city’s medical examiner will determine Boahene’s cause of death, and an investigation into the incident remains underway.
The incident is the latest in a handful of rare but sometimes deadly accidents involving passengers being dragged by subway trains.

In October 2022, a 20-year-old New Jersey man was killed at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan after his clothing or backpack became caught in the doors of a southbound No. 1 train as he attempted to board. He was dragged along the platform onto the tracks.
Six years earlier, 51-year-old Edward Leonard was killed while getting off an F train at the Union Turnpike-Kew Gardens station in Queens. Police said at the time that his clothing may have become caught in the doors before he was dragged along the platform and struck his head.
