Vice President JD Vance likened the Netflix TV show Emily in Paris to a “massive cultural criticism of millennial decision making” in a social media post on Monday.
Vance said he recently defended what he called the “masterwork of American television” in a debate with a friend. The Netflix TV show follows main character Emily Cooper, portrayed by actress Lily Collins, from Chicago to Paris as she brings her American experience to a new job at a French marketing firm.
In his sit-down pop culture take, the vice president opined that the show is about more than just a “bubbly girl who goes to Paris.”
“What it actually is, it is a massive cultural criticism of millennial decision making,” Vance said. “She goes to Paris, and it’s obvious to everybody watching the show that she should end up with the French chef, she should marry this guy, they should start a family, whether in Paris or America.”
He continued about how Cooper and the French chef, named Chef Gabriel and played by actor Lucas Bravo, make a series of decisions to put off ending up together.
“They make a series of absurd, sometimes hilarious, sometimes not particularly believable mistakes, where she ends up with a bunch of random people, more focused on her job, he ends up with a bunch of random people, more focused on his job,” Vance said.
“It’s, like, obvious: Fall in love, get married, the two were made for each other,” Vance continued. “And the fact that they keep on making atrocious decisions is kind of like the best bit of cultural commentary, I would say cultural criticism, of my generation, the millennials. You’ve got to watch Emily in Paris. It is, at the risk of overstating it, the Shakespeare of our time.”
The final, sixth season of Emily in Paris is set to debut in December.

Vance has been outspoken since his time in the political spotlight began about his support for marriage, the tradition of starting a family, and his hopes for another baby boom in the U.S.
Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, had their fourth child, Alec Vance, in July. The Vances, who met at Yale Law School, have been married since June 2014.
