President Donald Trump’s olive branch to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) fell on deaf ears Wednesday night in Dallas.
Trump has consistently voiced displeasure with Thune’s job leading the Senate Republican caucus over his failures to pass the SAVE America Act and eliminate the filibuster, though he has said he personally likes the South Dakotan.
And while shouting out various Republican leaders while delivering the keynote address on the first night of the first-ever Republican midterm convention, Trump began to compliment the Senate leader.
“John Thune is here from the Senate. Where’s John? Where’s John?” the president stated, prompting the crowd to break out in a chorus of boos.
“No, no, John is working hard. He’s got great opposition. He’s got great opposition from the Democrats,” Trump continued. “Schumer and these guys — they’re terrible. He’s got great opposition. He’s working very hard. He’s going to have great success. You watch. Gonna have — we are going to have great, great success with our Republican senators. And by the way, we have great Republican senators.”
Just a few moments later, Trump’s reiterated call for the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act earned thunderous cheers.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) told the Washington Examiner earlier on Wednesday that Thune should not have attended the convention this week.
“He’s the reason why we don’t have SAVE America,” she stated.

“The filibuster is a perversion of what it was supposed to represent,” Luna continued. “The Democrats, by the way, are saying they want to abolish the filibuster anyway. What gives, bro?”
