A District of Columbia police officer died Monday after suffering a gunshot wound in a police station.
The officer’s gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted, according to a preliminary statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.
“Nothing currently indicates that another party was involved,” an MPD spokesperson said.
The shooting occurred around 5:02 a.m. Monday in the Second District station near the Washington National Cathedral.
Shortly thereafter, the officer died of critical injuries on the way to George Washington University Hospital.
No further details were immediately provided about the officer or the circumstances behind the shooting. Local authorities have not specified whether it was an accident, though that appears to be the case.
The MPD Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the fatal incident.
