Jake Reiner, the eldest son of the late Rob and Michele Reiner, spoke out about his parents’ deaths for the first time since his filmmaker father and photographer mother were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home.
Jake Reiner’s younger brother, Nick Reiner, faces charges of murdering their parents in December 2025, charges Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to. Los Angeles law enforcement officials initially arrested Nick Reiner on two charges of first-degree murder two days after his parents were found deceased. In mid-August, a Los Angeles County grand jury indicted Nick Reiner on two first-degree murder charges, alleging that he was lying in wait before the killing.
Jake Reiner sat for an interview with ABC7 Los Angeles on Thursday, delving into how his surviving family has grieved during the past several months since his parents’ deaths.
“I got to be honest. I mean, it’s been eight months — it feels like eight years at the same time, and it also feels like eight minutes because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality. And you’re living through that every single day,” Jake Reiner told the outlet.
The eldest Reiner son also spoke about his siblings, saying he learned of his parents’ passing from his younger sister, Romy Reiner, the youngest of the three siblings.
“Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find Mom,’” Jake Reiner said.
He also described how his family shifted drastically after his parents were found dead in December.
“It’s like I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested, and it’s like now it’s just me and Romy,” Jake Reiner told the outlet.

The August grand jury indictment allows the case to skip a preliminary hearing in which prosecutors typically publicly unveil evidence, according to the Associated Press. The “lying in wait” circumstance with the other murder charges unveiled in the indictment makes Nick Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors have not determined if they will seek capital punishment.
