President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America as cross-border relations with Canada deteriorate amid trade negotiations.
“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade,” Trump said on Thursday from the White House. “Very sadly, even the military. You know, we defend Canada for nothing. We don’t get anything. They don’t pay us to defend Canada, but we defend Canada, and they understand that.”
Trump added from the Oval Office that Canada wants “to be treated like a state, but they’re not a state.”

“But they want to be treated like they’re a state, and so we just can’t do that,” he said.
Trump previewed the move earlier this week on social media, posting a map with the name change on Truth Social.
