Police arrested one suspect in Saturday’s shooting at Virginia State University that left five people injured, including one victim who was critically wounded.
Camron Harris, 19, was found hiding in a dormitory closet on campus when he was apprehended Saturday afternoon. The young man, who hails from Henrico, Virginia, was not a student or one of the injured people, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.
Harris was taken into custody and charged with four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Additional charges may be filed, police said. He is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.
Authorities previously said there were multiple shooters, but no more information has been provided about any additional suspects.
The five victims were between 17 and 23 years old. Four of them, including one 21-year-old man in critical condition, were not students at Virginia State University. The fifth person was a 20-year-old student who was released from the hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
The identities of the victims have not been released yet.
The shooting unfolded around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, two days before the fall semester was scheduled to start. Classes are still set to begin on Monday, as the university has not announced any cancellations or postponements. Residence halls were open for a week before the shooting early Saturday.
“We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community,” the university said. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority.”

Virginia State University, a historically black land-grant university founded in 1882, is located in Petersburg, Virginia, about 24 miles south of Richmond. The university has roughly 5,700 total students, most of whom are undergraduates.
An investigation into the shooting is being led by the Chesterfield County Police, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
