An unexpected federal court hearing in the case against Luigi Mangione is fueling speculation that the man accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson could be considering a plea deal just weeks before his state murder trial begins.
Federal prosecutors and Mangione’s attorneys jointly requested a conference for Friday in New York, which ABC News reported was intended to discuss a possible plea agreement. The reported conference follows Judge Gregory Carro granting the defense lawyers’ request for unrestricted media access to the criminal defendant’s upcoming trial.
The letter from Department of Justice prosecutors and defense attorneys for Mangione does not state a purpose for the meeting, only requesting that it occur.
“The parties write jointly to request a conference with the Court,” the letter said, per Fox News. “Based on communications with Chambers, we understand that the Court is available to hold the conference on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.”
In July, Manhattan state prosecutors acknowledged reports that Mangione and his lawyers may be considering a guilty plea in the accused’s federal case. State prosecutors argued that if a federal plea agreement is used to avoid a “just outcome” in Mangione’s state trial, the state has the right to advise the federal district court.
“The people are aware of public reporting regarding the possibility of a guilty plea in defendant’s federal case,” Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote. “If a proposed federal guilty plea would operate to defeat a just outcome in the state prosecution, the People could advise the federal district court of that consequence, and the court should consider that fact in deciding whether to accept the plea, as well as any opposition by the victim’s family to such a resolution.”
The 28-year-old Mangione faces several state charges related to murder and firearms offenses in New York, whereas the federal charges primarily center on interstate stalking resulting in the healthcare executive’s death. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The state trial is expected to begin with jury selection Sept. 8, and the federal trial is scheduled to begin selecting jurors on Jan. 5, 2027.
If convicted at the end of the state trial, Mangione could face 25 years to life in prison for his crimes, and the federal charges could carry a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The death penalty is no longer an option in the federal case.
