Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) said on Sunday she is making a “very rapid recovery” after being hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries in a hit-and-run crash in Ohio.
Kaptur, 80, was the victim of the two-person crash roughly one week ago in Toledo, located in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, which she represents. In the latest update on her condition, Kaptur revealed she is moving to a rehabilitation facility and making a speedy recovery, though she conceded the accident “was not a pleasant experience, and there were wounds that resulted.”
“As I move to physical rehabilitation, sharing a message with the thousands who shared good wishes from our community, across our region, our country, and around the world,” she said in a post to X. “It’s made a huge difference in my very rapid recovery. Each of you continue to uplift my spirit as we move forward. Thank you!”
The crash happened Aug. 2 on N. Detroit Avenue as Kaptur was heading to a church service with a staffer.
Kaptur is a centrist Democrat who has held the Ohio seat for decades, but she is viewed as a vulnerable incumbent as she runs for reelection in 2026.

Republicans have pinned their hopes of flipping the seat red on Derek Merrin, a former state representative who came within one percentage point of ousting Kaptur in 2024.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the district a “toss-up,” as President Donald Trump carried it by 7 percentage points in 2024. Some polling shows Merrin taking the victory in November.
