Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced Saturday that she has begun the process of freezing her eggs, sharing the personal decision with followers via social media and framing it as a part of a broader push to be more open about women’s health.
Ocasio-Cortez, 36, said she has kept her private life largely private but decided to share that she is starting the process, adding that she had been weighing the decision for a long time and saving up for the procedure.
Ocasio-Cortez livestreamed part of the process on Instagram, administering a hormone injection to herself on camera ahead of a scheduled Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week. In the video, she joked with viewers not to make the moment weird, acknowledging that many inevitably would.
“I think it’s bada**,” said Ocasio-Cortez.

The announcement comes amid persistent chatter about Ocasio-Cortez’s political future, including speculation she could mount a presidential run in 2028. She has previously brushed off direct questions about presidential ambitions.
Ocasio-Cortez has built a reputation for using social media to speak candidly about women’s health and reproductive issues, a focus that intensified following the Supreme Court’s 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade and this year’s brief suspension of access to abortion pills. She has said she plans to continue documenting the egg-freezing process publicly and is inviting followers to submit questions.
