Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has accused progressive Democratic politicians such as Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of embracing anti-American ideology.
Speaking about the Democratic Party’s leftward shift, Cruz argued that progressive candidates represent a broader ideological movement hostile to American traditions.
“They’re crazy enough, yes. They want to cancel Thanksgiving, they want to cancel Christmas,” Cruz said on Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime Tuesday. “These communists hate America. They hate capitalism.”
Republicans have made el Sayed’s victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary a focal point, arguing that his platform reflects the growing influence of the party’s left flank.
Meanwhile, Mamdani’s rise in New York has fueled broader Republican attacks portraying Democrats as increasingly aligned with socialist policies.
Cruz went on to single out el Sayed and Mamdani, claiming both embody what he called a dangerous political alliance. “El Sayed is also an Islamist, as is Mamdani,” Cruz said. “You see the green-red convergence, where the communists and the Islamists, they want Sharia law, they hate Jews, they hate Christians, they hate capitalism, they hate America.”

“All of this is coming together in a way that is really a toxic, toxic stew,” Cruz said.
Cruz also took to X, writing that “this is literally a communist takeover of the Democrat Party. They want to tear up the Constitution. They want to abolish the United States Senate. And somehow, they’re running for the Senate.”
