Washington Examiner executive editor Bob Cusack said Republicans must effectively counter Democrats’ argument that President Donald Trump and his family have financially benefited while ordinary Americans continue to struggle with high costs.
Cusack’s comments come after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) argued that Republicans have failed to deliver on campaign promises to lower costs, accusing Trump of enriching himself while everyday Americans face financial strain.
“That argument of hypocrisy, basically, ‘Well listen, the president and his family are making a lot of money but everyone else is suffering,’ that’s a pretty effective argument,” Cusack said Monday on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal. “Republicans have to counter that.”
Trump returned to office after winning the 2024 presidential election on a campaign centered largely on improving the economy, with many voters viewing Republicans as better equipped to handle inflation and rising costs, but that advantage has been eroding, with reports showing declining support for his handling of the economy.
Cusack acknowledged that due to public frustration over persistent high prices and broader economic uncertainty, Democrats have found a potentially compelling line of attack.

Cusack also noted that while Trump frequently argues he inherited economic problems from former President Joe Biden, Republicans now bear political responsibility for the economy after winning unified control of Washington.
”Republicans own it. They own the economy,” Cusack said.
