Manosphere influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami on Saturday after being hit with new human and sex trafficking charges, bringing national attention back to the brothers.
The influencers are two of the most controversial figures on the internet today, with legions of fans and detractors. They’ve made a name for themselves by giving polarizing financial, lifestyle, and romantic advice to a largely young and male audience. Before their internet fame, they made a fortune running a webcam pornography business, wealth they used to help boost their online presence. It’s from this webcam business that the most recent charges stem, including accusations of rape, sex trafficking, and child pornography.
The brothers have repeatedly pleaded their innocence in the litany of charges against them.
Who are the Tate brothers?
Andrew Tate, 39, and Tristan Tate, 38, were born to an American chess master father and English mother. Andrew Tate first pursued fame as a kickboxer, beginning in 2005 and medically retiring at age 30 in 2016. He began cultivating his ultra-masculine personality during this period.
In 2014, Andrew Tate began his pornographic webcamming empire, recruiting women by dating and plying them with gifts. He would later provide detailed instructions to his paying followers on how to entrap women into “sexual slavery,” according to a lengthy profile in the New Yorker, in a series of tutorials he called his Ph.D., or “Pimping Hoes Degree.”
The duo moved to Romania in 2015, partly to avoid three sexual assault allegations leveled against Andrew Tate in the United Kingdom. He would briefly return to the U.K. to take part in its version of Big Brother, but was kicked off after video emerged of him beating and taunting one of his cam models, which he insisted was consensual.
The brothers would make millions off of this empire, largely by taking almost all the proceeds from their models, who numbered several dozen. Dozens of these models got Andrew’s name tattooed on their skin.
The Tates would use this money to subsidize an increasingly glamorous lifestyle, which they used to cultivate a growing online presence. This would culminate in the creation of Hustler’s University, a platform where members would pay a $49.99 a month subscription fee to access his coaching on business and life advice. Hustler’s University was responsible for Andrew Tate’s sudden explosion in popularity in 2022, after he instructed members to make edits of him for TikTok, from which many members would receive a commission. Over 160,000 students enrolled in the program before payment processors withdrew from the platform, shutting it down. It was widely considered to be a pyramid scheme.
What truly made Andrew Tate famous was his communication of highly controversial views, which skyrocketed his engagement and won him the admiration of iconoclastic youth around the world. He became the single best-known figure in the “manosphere,” an informal internet network of vastly different ideologies united around some version of male betterment. Among the members of the community were involuntarily celibates, or incels, who based their identity around their inability to procure a romantic interest. On the opposite end were pickup artists, who taught men how to approach women to have sex with, often using questionable means. Between these extremes are men’s rights activists and general anti-feminist activists.
The Tate brothers occupied the extreme end of focusing on pursuing women for sex, advocating for conventionally immoral means to do so. Andrew Tate particularly became a favorite on several right-wing podcast circuits for his humor and charisma, which he would use to push for ideas he’d openly embrace as misogynistic while establishing plausible deniability through playing up his character.
After the end of Hustler’s University, the Tates established the War Room, an expanded version of the previous iteration that cost even more, with a fee of $8,000. It was through this outfit that Tate taught his PhD., which included detailed instructions on psychological manipulation and grooming of women to become prostitutes or pornographers, all while the “pimps” would rake in nearly all the resulting money.
The New Yorker profile of Tate outlined some of the pupils who followed the Tates’ advice, including a Texan man who claimed he was making six figures while pressuring his girlfriend to stream pornography of herself for 13 hours at a time.
“Got her on Chaturbate, and sleeping in the concrete floored garage with no A/C, spiders, and roaches,” the Texan man wrote with a photo attached, to which Tristan Tate replied, “Absolutely legendary work.”
Andrew and Tristan Tate were known to tone down their message when appearing alongside, or speaking to, more prestigious figures, including leading figures in the conservative movement in the U.S. Andrew Tate was able to garner favor within members of the Trump family, which got him out of legal trouble until Saturday. His claims of political persecution garnered sympathy from conservative figures in the U.S., which led to fawning interviews with Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens.
Why are the Tates in legal trouble?
The Tate brothers have been in and out of legal trouble for over a decade, but the most serious allegations began in 2022, when Romanian police raided his compound to rescue a girl Tristan Tate flew in from Miami and tried to coerce her into doing pornography. As the conditions of the compound came to light, the two were soon charged with rape, sex trafficking, and running a criminal enterprise. The Romanian government instituted a travel ban, but the two were able to have the ban lifted and fly to the U.S. after pressure from the Trump administration. Procedural issues have indefinitely delayed the Romanian case.
After months of living their previous lifestyle, legal trouble hit the Tate duo once again on Saturday, when U.S. marshals arrested them outside an event in Miami under a sealed extradition warrant.
The new charges from the U.K. Crown Prosecution Service include 32 new charges against Andrew Tate and six new charges against Tristan Tate. The charges against Andrew include seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and 19 charges relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography. Tristan was hit with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.
The charges concern alleged offenses between July 2010 and August 2017 and involve four more alleged victims.
“The CPS has requested the extradition of the Tates from the US. They have been arrested and await extradition proceedings to the UK,” Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the Special Crime Division at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement.
The Tates’ lawyer, Joseph McBride, claimed the arrest and extradition request are a “political hit” from the U.K.

“We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain’s political dirty work,” he told the BBC.
However, their luck may have run out this time around, as the actual arrest shows the U.S. is moving forward on the extradition request.
