Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) says socialists believe classic children’s figures such as Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head are racist.
“Sen. Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, Mayor Mamdani, the mayor of New York, Mr. Graham Platner running for senate in Maine, they are socialist,” Kennedy said on the This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von podcast Tuesday.
“I know some of them, they think all white people are racist, I know some of them, they think Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Seuss, and Mr. Potato Head are all racist,” Kennedy said.
Democratic Socialists of America is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with chapters in all 50 states. According to their site, DSA believes that working people should democratically run the economy and society so human needs are met for all.
The DSA also says it wants to win what they call “radical” reforms, including single-payer Medicare for All, defunding the police and “refunding communities,” and the Green New Deal, as part of a transition to “a freer, more just life.”
Prominent political figures associated with the DSA include Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who is not an official DSA member, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. On Tuesday, Melat Kiros, who is associated with the organization, defeated Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), a 15-term incumbent, in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, following on from successes last week in New York.
“They believe in a government-run economy, they believe that, my words not theirs, you should send all of your money and all of your freedom to them and they can make decisions for you. I don’t believe that,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy contrasted his support by highlighting his belief in free enterprise, which he described as the exact opposite of socialist policies.
“I believe in free enterprise, I think free enterprise has done more to get people out of poverty and all the social programs put together, they believe in defunding the police, they believe that cops are a bigger problem than criminals, they believe in defunding Immigration Customs Enforcement,” Kennedy said.
