Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) took aim Monday at President Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 Great American State Fair, calling it a shadow of Minnesota’s.
“America’s real state fair starts August 27,” Walz said in an X post. “Plan accordingly and thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Trump’s 16-day Great American State Fair celebrates the country’s 250th birthday by featuring exhibitions from all 50 states, a Ferris wheel, a rodeo, and sample food vendors on the National Mall.
Walz had earlier called the Minnesota State Fair “America’s best fair” and remains a frequent critic of the current Trump administration. His criticisms follow states and performers who have refused to participate in the Freedom 250 celebration over partisan concerns and personal opposition to the Trump administration.
Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha said Democrats are too busy sulking over a joyful celebration.

“Can we just enjoy 250 without everybody else just being miserable about it?” he said. “It’s the best time in the world right now. We got the World Cup, we got 250 UFC fights at the White House. Can we just enjoy it without this nonsense?”
Walz was 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’s running mate. After losing the popular vote, Walz once again entered the news cycle for allegedly retaliating against state employees who raised concerns about fraud. Up to half of the roughly $18 billion allocated to 14 Minnesota-run federal aid programs may have been stolen.
