Congressional candidate vows to rename Florida’s I-75 as Donald Trump interstate

A congressional candidate running in Florida has vowed to rename the state’s I-75 the “President Donald J. Trump interstate” in an effort to secure a coveted endorsement.

I-75, also known as “Alligator Alley,” is a 78-mile stretch that runs through the Florida Everglades, connecting Naples on the Gulf Coast to Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic Coast. Originally a two-lane road built in the 1960s, the heavily trafficked interstate gets its name from the surrounding Alligator population.

Casey Askar, who is running in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, has been a longtime supporter of Trump, noting that he helped the president secure support from Chaldean Catholic Christian voters, a key constituency he says contributed to Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Askar, who previously ran for Congress in 2020 in Florida’s 19th District, only to lose the Republican primary to Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), praised Trump’s leadership and economic agenda in a press release, saying, “President Donald Trump continues to move America forward on the road to prosperity.”

Askar’s efforts are notably similar to Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who announced in May his introduction of a bill to rename U.S Highway 287 after Trump. Cornyn, however, dropped that plan after he lost his Texas Senate primary to Ken Paxton.

The renaming of the Florida interstate would be just the latest effort to honor the president.

In February, the Florida legislature approved the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to the President Donald J Trump International Airport.
