Washington Examiner Editorial Director Hugo Gurdon said that socialism doesn’t work, arguing people try to make it sound “friendly” by adding “democratic” before it.
“The truth is the word ‘democratic’ is like a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine of socialism go down,” Gurdon said on Fox News’s The Will Cain Show Wednesday. “The words ‘democratic’ there are concealing a system which actually forces things on people.”
Gurdon pointed to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s housing policies as an example. Mamdani is a self-described democratic socialist.
“He controls rents so landlords don’t have the money to maintain their properties, and then when the properties are not maintained, he wants to take it away from them,” Gurdon said. “It’s a one-two socialist punch.”
“It’s not a democratic system. It’s actually [that] all socialist systems ultimately use force, and you can see it with Mamdani now,” he added.
Despite efforts to conceal it as socialism, Gurdon argued it’s not a system that works.

Gurdon said European countries that once adopted socialism into their governments are now “turning away” from it.
“[Socialism] actually does not provide people with the things that they need and it always produces rationing,” he said. “They’re turning against those systems, and they’re realizing that free markets are what actually produces the goods and services that people need.”
