Thomas Kean Jr. signs off on stock trades despite monthslong House absence

Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-NJ) has missed over 100 votes in the House due to an undisclosed illness, but the New Jersey Republican is still tending to his finances.

Kean, 57, has not voted in the House since March 5, but financial disclosures show that the lawmaker has certified 13 stock trades since March 10.

The latest filing, signed on May 22 and submitted to the House clerk’s office, shows the lawmaker traded stock in Analog Devices, First Citizens BancShares, nVent Electric, Take-Two Interactive Software, and Texas Instruments.

It’s not clear whether Kean made the trades himself or if a financial representative for the lawmaker conducted them. The Washington Examiner has reached out to Kean’s office for comment.

Few details have been shared regarding the congressman’s illness; however, Kean told the New Jersey Globe last week that he expects to make a full recovery and be back on Capitol Hill and the campaign trail in the “next couple of weeks.”

“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” Kean told the outlet. “I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents.”

Kean confirmed during the interview that he is still running for reelection for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, a purple swing district that will be crucial to Republicans’ effort to hold their House majority in November. Concerns over whether the Republican would be able to continue serving rose amid his absence.

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson told reporters on May 21 that Kean told him he would be returning to Capitol Hill sometime in June during a phone call, and that Kean thanked him for giving him space to recover.

Kean’s father, former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr., told CNN that his son is “under the care of a doctor,” and is recovering from a serious, but temporary illness. Kean Sr. declined to provide details about his son’s health but told the outlet that his son should be back soon.

“He’s hopefully coming back soon and he’s under the care of a doctor,” Kean Sr. said. “They all agree he’s going to be fine. He’s under a doctor’s care.”
