Trump taps Kari Lake for Jamaica ambassadorship after Voice of America turmoil

President Donald Trump is doling out a plum ambassador post to Kari Lake, tapping her to represent the United States in Jamaica after her rocky tenure leading the Voice of America.

The White House announced Lake’s nomination on Monday, two months after a federal judge overturned her efforts to largely shutter the federal news service and ruled that Trump had improperly elevated her as its de facto leader.

Before her tenure in the Trump administration, Lake was the Republican nominee for Senate in Arizona, losing to now-Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) in 2024, and has made her name in national politics as a firebrand supporter of Trump.

In the same announcement, the White House nominated another Trump loyalist, Doug Mastriano, to an ambassador post in the Slovak Republic. His nomination is especially controversial due to his attendance outside the Capitol before the Jan. 6 riot and efforts to help overturn the 2020 presidential election results. He previously mounted a failed run for governor of Pennsylvania.

To hold the ambassador job, both must first be vetted by the Foreign Relations Committee and then be confirmed on the Senate floor. It’s so far unclear whether Mastriano will face opposition from Republicans, who hold a three-seat majority, but Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) has previously opposed nominees who express sympathy for Jan. 6 rioters or downplay the events of that day.

The nomination of Lake continues a trend of Trump rewarding political allies with lower-profile ambassador posts. The Senate confirmed former football star Herschel Walker to represent the U.S. in the Bahamas last October. Walker lost a 2022 race for Senate in Georgia amid domestic abuse allegations.

Outside of the State Department, Trump also announced the nomination of Dr. Nicole Saphier as U.S. surgeon general on April 30, withdrawing his second pick for the role, Casey Means, in the same release.

Means’s nomination stalled out in the Senate, in part, due to her vaccine skepticism.
