House Republicans are eyeing an effort to expunge President Donald Trump’s two impeachments in the lower chamber.
Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-CA) resolution to erase Trump’s impeachments has gained the support of Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), who is known as one of the most powerful Republicans in the lower chamber.
“Anytime you have the support of Jim Jordan, you feel like you’re on a freight train to winning,” Issa spokesman Jonathan Wilcox told the Washington Examiner.
The House has impeached Trump twice, in 2019 and 2021. In 2022, then-Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) introduced resolutions to expunge Trump’s impeachments. In 2023, then-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) introduced resolutions to formally clear Trump’s record, arguing that both impeachments were unconstitutional and politically motivated.
Wilcox noted that other lawmakers have sought to clear Trump with similar measures, but suggested Issa’s resolution is significant because of “new information that has come to light.”
“This is our first and best resolution — others have been crafted, but you should take into consideration the new information that has come to light,” he said. “It is incontrovertible that the previous impeachment processes were tainted — intentionally — and the Congress has a real vested interest in making this right.”
The “new information” references recently declassified materials from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, which indicate that the whistleblower whose complaint triggered Trump’s first impeachment coordinated with congressional Democrats before filing the allegation. Gabbard’s office filed a criminal referral regarding the matter and sent it to the Justice Department in April.
“Democrats weaponized impeachment against President Trump with politically motivated charges,” Jordan told Fox News Digital. “We applaud Chairman Issa for leading the fight to expunge this sham from the record.”
