Maryland Republican challenges Wes Moore over military record transparency

.

A Republican challenger to Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) demanded more transparency over the governor’s military records.

Federal contracting consultant John Myrick sought to force Moore’s hand by releasing his own detailed military records. He told Fox Baltimore that he granted full authorization to the military to make public all his records connected to his time in the military, something Moore still hasn’t done.

“Maryland voters need to be informed about the candidates [who] are seeking offices at all levels,” Myrick told the outlet. “That’s the only way you can actually make sure you’re getting representation that actually meets your needs.”

“I have no problem releasing my full military record to any news outlet that requests it,” he said, adding that he would do so “whenever you want it.”

Moore served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1998 to 2014, carrying out a deployment to Afghanistan as part of the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division. The controversy over his military records arose over his previous claim that he was awarded the Bronze Star.

In 2024, he said an “honest mistake” had led to the mishap, claiming his superior officer told him “to include the award on my application for the Fellowship because he received confirmation with the approval authority that the Bronze Star was signed and approved by his senior leadership.”

The new pressure for increased transparency could bring the issue back to the forefront. Though Myrick has little chance of beating Moore in the deep blue state, it could imperil a possible future presidential run. Though Moore has repeatedly denied any presidential desires, many Democrats eye him as a top contender for 2028.
