Trump approval hits new low as over half of US ‘strongly’ opposes Iran war

.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating on how he is handling his job hit a new low, according to a poll released Sunday, with 54% of respondents “strongly” disapproving of his handling of the Iran war.

Overall, 37% of people approve of Trump’s performance as president, while 63% disapprove, putting his job rating at the lowest point of his second term, according to the NBC poll. Roughly one year ago, 55% of respondents disapproved of Trump’s performance.

The economy, “threats to democracy,” and healthcare were voters’ three top issues, in that order, according to the poll. Two-thirds of respondents disapproved of Trump’s handling of inflation and the cost of living.

Two-thirds also disapproved of Trump’s handling of the Iran war, 54% “strongly” and 13% “somewhat.”

The development comes as the conflict with Iran is stretching into its seventh week and has destabilized the global energy market due to the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz during the war.

A ceasefire between the United States and Iran was reached on April 7. The two-week truce is set to end on Tuesday. Ahead of the deadline, U.S. negotiators, including Vice President JD Vance, are heading to Pakistan in the hope of sealing a final deal to end the war.

In the past, negotiations have repeatedly faltered over Iran’s refusal to end its nuclear program and hand over the regime’s enriched uranium. Trump has said in recent days that the country has become more amenable to U.S. demands after Washington blockaded Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, expanding the country’s economic issues.

Trump threatened Sunday to blow up all of Iran’s bridges and power plants if it doesn’t agree to a deal.

“NO MORE MR. NICE GUY! They’ll come down fast, they’ll come down easy and, if they don’t take the DEAL, it will be my Honor to do what has to be done, which should have been done to Iran, by other Presidents, for the last 47 years. IT’S TIME FOR THE IRAN KILLING MACHINE TO END!” he said

The NBC News Decision Desk Poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, surveyed 32,433 adults online from March 30-April 13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.8 percentage points.
