Massachusetts is seeing record-breaking demand for its commemorative America 250 license plates, with tens of thousands of drivers applying ahead of a key lottery deadline for low-number plates tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial.
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles said interest in the “MA250” plates, which were created to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, has surged well beyond expectations.
More than 71,000 plates have already been issued for passenger vehicles statewide, while over 44,000 people entered a lottery for highly sought low-number versions, according to state data.
Applications for the low-number plate lottery are set to close Friday at 5 p.m., capping weeks of heightened demand that officials say have made the design the most popular specialty plate in Massachusetts history.
Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) recently touted the plate’s popularity, calling it the most widely requested specialty plate the state has ever offered. The design features a blue background with “1776” surrounded by 13 stars and the phrase “250 Years of Independence,” evoking imagery associated with the nation’s founding.
State officials and design experts say the plate’s appeal stems from a mix of historical symbolism and aesthetics. The Revolutionary-era imagery and bold, simple color scheme have resonated with drivers looking to display both state pride and national identity on their vehicles.
The lottery component, which includes low-number plates often considered more prestigious, has further fueled interest.
Massachusetts has long held lotteries for these plates, which include numbers as low as single or double digits, and they are typically released when they become available.

The surge in demand marks a significant milestone for the state’s specialty plate program, which dates back decades. Previous popular designs, such as the “right whale” environmental plate and the Cape and Islands plate, each drew tens of thousands of drivers but have been surpassed by the MA250 plate’s rapid adoption.
Officials say the plates will continue to be available beyond the lottery deadline, though the drawing for low-number plates is expected to remain the most competitive aspect of the program.
