Newsom digs at ‘lightweight’ Vance as Democrats celebrate Viktor Orban’s loss

.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) took a shot at Vice President JD Vance in the wake of Hungary’s election on Sunday.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an ally of President Donald Trump, conceded his loss to Peter Magyar, losing his bid for a fifth term in office. Vance stumped for Orban during a visit to Hungary for two days last week and insisted the incumbent candidate was “going to win” reelection.

Newsom has made a name for himself with his digs at the Trump administration, and he took another one while congratulating Hungary on the election results.

“JD Vance proves he’s a lightweight twice in 48 hours,” Newsom said on X. “Congratulations to the people of Hungary — democracy, free press and human rights win today. There is hope.”

The United States, in negotiations led by Vance, failed to agree to a peace deal with Iran on Saturday. The Washington Examiner contacted Newsom’s office for comment.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also poked fun at Vance after Orban’s loss, asking Republicans to “please put this guy on the campaign trail.” Schumer also expressed enthusiasm for the midterm elections in a separate post.

“Pay attention, Donald Trump,” Schumer said on X. “Wannabe dictators wear out their welcome. November 2026 can’t come soon enough.

Other Democrats joined in on commemorating the defeat of Trump’s ally.

“Far-right authoritarian Viktor Orbán has lost the election,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said on X. “Trump sycophants and MAGA extremists in Congress are up next in November. Winter is coming.”

“The end of Viktor Orbán’s autocratic regime is a victory not just for Hungary, but for people who value democracy around the world,” former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on X. “Congratulations to Tisza, to incoming leader Péter Magyar, and to Hungarians everywhere.”

EU JUBILANT AFTER ORBAN OUSTED IN HUNGARY ELECTION

Vance said before the election that the U.S. is “going to work with whoever wins the Hungarian election because we love the people of Hungary.” Magyar seemed to respond positively to Vance’s assurance, saying that a TISZA-led government “will regard the United States as a key partner, both as a NATO ally and as an economic partner.”
