Multiple congressional Democrats went after President Donald Trump on Easter Sunday over his recent threats against Iran, calling them “unhinged” and questioning his mental fitness.
Trump amped up his rhetoric against Iran over the weekend, sending out numerous Truth Social posts calling on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, or else face attacks on its power plants and bridges. One of those, posted on Sunday morning, included Trump urging Iran to “Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.”
The post was quickly panned by Democrats in both chambers.
“Happy Easter, America. As you head off to church and celebrate with friends and family, the President of the United States is ranting like an unhinged madman on social media,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) posted on X. “He’s threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies. This is who he is, but this is not who we are. Our country deserves so much better.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) also called Trump’s statement the “ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual,” urging Congress to work to halt any further action in the Iran war.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), meanwhile, took things a step further, floating the 25th Amendment, which removes presidents from office.
“If I were in Trump’s Cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment,” Murphy posted on X. “This is completely, utterly unhinged. He’s already killed thousands. He’s going to kill thousands more.”
Murphy also later said any such attack on civilian infrastructure in Iran would constitute a war crime.
On the House side, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) led the condemnation of Trump’s statement, calling it a “disgusting and unhinged Easter message.”
Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) also expressed shock about the escalation in Trump’s rhetoric.
“This is an actual message from the President of the United States on Easter Sunday,” she posted on X. “Trump’s instability is undeniable. House Republicans need to join us in ending this war before he puts more troops in harm’s way.”
Reps. Becca Balint (D-VT), Maxine Dexter (D-OR), Shri Thanedar (D-MI), among others, also trashed Trump’s post.
Despite the united opposition from Democrats, Trump is showing little sign of abandoning his deadline for Iran to reopen the strait.
TRUMP VOWS TO BLOW UP ‘WHOLE COUNTRY’ OF IRAN IF NO DEAL MADE, WITH ‘VERY LITTLE’ OFF TABLE
The president spoke to numerous media outlets about his plans on Sunday. Among those include blowing up “the whole country” of Iran if it doesn’t make a deal. He added that “very little” would be off the table in the event of such a large-scale strike operation.
Trump’s deadline for Iran is due to hit on Tuesday, April 7 at 8 p.m.
