Vance teases release of new book ‘Communion’ on religious faith and conversion to Catholicism

Vice President JD Vance is set to release a new book on his religious faith and personal conversion to Catholicism, adding to his profile as both a bestselling author and a Republican political figure.

The book, titled Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, is scheduled for release on June 16 through HarperCollins Publishers, according to the Associated Press. It will explore Vance’s spiritual journey, including his shift from a Christian upbringing to atheism and ultimately to Catholicism as an adult.

Vance, 41, said the book reflects his loss and rediscovery of faith, writing in a statement that his return to religion “only happened because I had lost it to begin with.” He added that the work grapples with why “the Christian faith of my youth failed to properly take root.”

According to the publisher, the roughly 300-page book has been in progress since 2019, the same year Vance converted to Catholicism. The project draws in part from an earlier, shelved religious memoir and will also include reflections on his time in public life.

Vance’s literary return follows the success of his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which sold more than a million copies and was later adapted into a Netflix film. The book, which chronicled his upbringing in a working-class Appalachian family, helped launch him to national prominence and eventually into politics.

Vance’s conversion to Catholicism in 2019 followed years of personal and intellectual exploration, including time spent as an atheist. He has credited his faith with providing a sense of purpose that he did not find in his education at Yale or his subsequent career in finance.

Since becoming vice president, Vance has frequently cited Catholic teachings as influential in shaping his views on family, culture, and policy, making him one of the most openly religious figures at the highest levels of U.S. government.

The announcement of Communion raises speculation about Vance’s political future. It is common for national figures to publish books before launching presidential campaigns, and the release comes as candidates position themselves early for the 2028 election cycle. Vance has said he is not focused on a run and would wait until after the 2026 midterm elections to decide.

BOOKS BY POLITICIANS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2026 AHEAD OF MIDTERM ELECTIONS

On the Democratic side, several possible 2028 contenders have released books and toured the country ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, seemingly as a litmus test for their possible presidential platforms.

Among them are California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and former Vice President Kamala Harris, both of whom are viewed as likely Democratic candidate nominees in 2028.
