House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said President Donald Trump needs to “keep his reckless mouth shut” in response to Trump calling the Democratic Party the United States’ “greatest enemy.”
Trump made his statement on Sunday morning following “the death of Iran,” referring to the U.S. conflict against the Middle Eastern country. He added that the current “greatest enemy” of the U.S. is “the Radical Left, Highly Incompetent, Democrat Party,” ending his Truth Social post with his signature, “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
“Donald Trump should keep his reckless mouth shut before he gets somebody killed,” Jeffries said on CNN’s State of the Union.
Political violence has been rising across the nation in recent years, with multiple instances happening over the last year. Two Minnesota lawmakers were killed by a gunman impersonating the police in June, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed in September, and an Idaho woman was arrested in February for allegedly stealing an ambulance and crashing it into a building leased by the Department of Homeland Security.
Jeffries also indicated he won’t support increasing funding for the U.S. conflict with Iran, as War Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Thursday that the Pentagon is seeking at least $200 billion in additional federal funding. Jeffries said Trump and Republicans “haven’t” made the case for involving the U.S. in this war, and added that “gas prices are through the roof.”
“We should not be spending billions of dollars per day at this point in time to drop bombs in the Middle East when Republicans are unwilling to spend a dime to actually extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits and make sure that Americans can go see a doctor when they need one. It’s a priority issue here,” Jeffries said.

The American Automobile Association’s national average for gasoline is at $3.94 per gallon on Sunday, up by $1 compared to a month ago before the conflict began. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told the Washington Examiner that he believes Trump is “very aware of gas prices,” and the president recognizes “the objective in Iran has to be quickly and decisively.”
On Saturday, Trump gave Iran 48 hours, two days, to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before the U.S. would “obliterate” their power plants, starting with the largest one. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that “This is the only language the Iranians understand,” and the president will take “whatever steps necessary” to achieve his goals.
