Cuban officials report islandwide blackout amid US oil blockade

.

Officials in Cuba announced an islandwide blackout on Monday amid the country’s energy crisis.

“A total disconnection of the National Electric Power System has occurred,” Cuban officials wrote on X, saying restoration efforts were underway.

The blackout comes as the Trump administration turned its Latin American focus to Cuba following the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump imposed a U.S. blockade and sweeping tariffs against foreign governments supplying Cuba with oil, resulting in an energy crisis for the island country.

“For three months, no fuel ships have arrived,” Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Friday. “We are working under very adverse conditions that are having an impact on the lives of all our people.”

More than a week ago, another blackout left millions without power in the western part of the island.
