Authorities from the FBI and the Department of Justice have conducted raids of the office and private home of the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The raids took place at the public school district’s office building in downtown Los Angeles and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s home in San Pedro.
Spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California Ciaran McEvoy confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the federal authorities conducted “a search pursuant to an under seal, court-authorized warrant.” The spokesman for the office, led by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, had no further comment on the matter.
The FBI’s Los Angeles office also confirmed that the affidavit in support of the warrant was sealed by the court and had no further comment on the matter.
The reason for the raid was not immediately clear.
“We have been informed of law enforcement activity at Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters and at the home of the Superintendent,” the LAUSD said in a statement. “The District is cooperating with the investigation and we do not have further information at this time.
Carvalho, who oversees the second-largest public school district in America, has been in the public spotlight before over his criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A Portuguese native, he was previously an illegal immigrant before obtaining a student visa, according to the New York Times.
