At least two dead after ‘targeted’ shooting at Rhode Island hockey game

At least two people have died after a shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island on Monday.

One suspect opened fire during a hockey game at the Dennis M Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, killing two people and injuring three others. The suspect is also dead. According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooting is believed to be “targeted.”

“It was a Senior Night — a time for them to celebrate and to remember. It’s very unfortunate that this happened today,” Goncalves said. “Again, we’re trying to offer some services. We have the Rhode Island EMA. We have the federal EMA out there.”

“We’ll do anything we can for the outreach to make sure that these kids are getting some kind of support in the days to follow,” she said. “Obviously, it’s going to all settle in probably later tonight or tomorrow for them.”

Goncalves said the shooting, rooted in a “family dispute,” killed one person at the scene. Another died from their wounds after being transported to the hospital. The suspect is reported to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

Goncalves declined to give the identity of the shooter, the victims, or the relationship between them.

A source with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told Fox News that the shooting was a murder-suicide, adding that the suspect was an adult male who shot his wife and three children before turning the gun on himself — with only one of his three children surviving.

Gov. Dan McKee (D-RI) issued a statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing sympathy for the victims and their families.
