World Economic Forum pulls Davos invitation from Iran amid deadly protests

The World Economic Forum has revoked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s invitation to its annual summit in Davos, Switzerland, this week as the Islamic regime continues massacring thousands of civilians.

Iran’s presence at the meeting of global bodies was previously expected until the summit’s organizers announced otherwise.

“The Iranian Foreign Minister will not be attending Davos,” the WEF posted on X early Monday morning. “Although he was invited last fall, the tragic loss of lives of civilians in Iran over the past few weeks means that it is not right for the Iranian government to be represented at Davos this year.”

The international organization faced calls to pull Iran’s invitation at the last minute. Araghchi was previously scheduled for an interview on Tuesday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush were among the most vocal figures on the matter after United Against Nuclear Iran asked the WEF to exclude Iran from the summit.

In turn, the Iranian ambassador to Switzerland said the WEF’s eventual decision was unjustified and accused the forum of capitulating to figures speaking out against the Iranian regime.

Iranian security forces have killed over 3,900 people as of Sunday, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. An Iranian official estimated there have been at least 5,000 deaths, including about 500 security officers. The deaths unfolded during a series of anti-government protests across Iran over the past few weeks, with the reported violence escalating more recently.

President Donald Trump has been considering authorizing military action to target Iran in the wake of the deadly protests. He has not made a decision on intervening yet.

Trump repeatedly threatened to mobilize the U.S. military against Iran if peaceful protesters were killed in large numbers.

The president is expected to appear in Davos on Wednesday and meet global business leaders. The annual summit lasts until Friday.
