Burchett accuses media of ‘double standard’ when covering missed subpoenas

.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) accused the press of pointing “their cameras down immediately” after he suggested Bill and Hillary Clinton are benefiting from a double standard.

Burchett spoke at a press conference on Wednesday, following what was supposed to be the deposition of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who did not appear before the House Oversight Committee. After comparing the Clintons to two advisers to President Donald Trump who also avoided a congressional deposition, Burchett alleged the press was not eager to film his comments.

Both Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon of the first Trump administration served prison time for defying a subpoena from the now-defunct January 6 Committee. These two were found in contempt of Congress. The Clintons could also now face a similar outcome, as the House is expected to vote on the matter next week.

“Of course they no-show you know my buddies Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro didn’t show up and they got sent to prison as a double standard. I’ll tell you the bigger double standard is when I mention that in the press conference — I wish we would’ve had it on film — but the press just put their cameras down immediately when I said that,” Burchett said in a video posted to X.

“These cards are very much stacked against us and justice and the Clintons of course they thumb their nose at justice because they’re allowed to. They’ve been allowed to since they were in Arkansas and they’re gonna continue to do it. It’s really a shame that that’s the pinnacle of success for the Democrat party really,” Burchett said.

A protester was also present during Wednesday’s press conference. Burchett referred to the protester as a “paid agitator” and “pathetic.”

In a letter to House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY), the Clintons criticized the committee for dismissing previous subpoenas issued to seven other witnesses on the matter of Epstein.

“In fact, since you started your investigation last year, you have interviewed a total of two people. Two,” the letter read. “A legal analysis prepared by two law firms and provided to you yesterday makes clear your subpoenas are legally invalid.”

Both Bannon and Navarro served four months each in prison. Trump pardoned Bannon just before leaving office in January 2021. Since entering office a second time, Trump has hired Navarro as senior counselor for trade and manufacturing.
