Former Democratic Alaska Rep. Mary Peltola raised $1.5 million in the first 24 hours following the launch of her Senate campaign, showing early excitement for her bid.
Peltola’s single-day fundraising exceeded the $1.2 million brought in by her opponent, incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK), over the last quarter of last year. The total helps establish her as a durable challenger in the deep-red state.
“In just 24 hours, Alaskans made it clear that we’re ready to put Alaska first,” Peltola said in a statement. “I’m grateful and honored for this incredible support from people who are ready to take on the special interests and DC people and focus on what matters: fish, family, and freedom.”
Of the $1.5 million total, 96% of donations were $100 or less, according to figures shared with Politico.
She also said over 500 people volunteered for her campaign within the first day.
Peltola’s impressive finances were bolstered by appeals to donors from Democratic heavyweights, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), former Vice President Kamala Harris, and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA).
PELTOLA REOPENS ALASKA FOR DEMOCRATS EYEING SENATE PICKUPS
The Alaska Democrat boasts a unique appeal, mixing a centrist image with a focus on state matters such as fisheries. Her political career was defined by an upset in an August 2022 congressional special election, though she was later defeated in 2024. Democrats are hoping she can recreate the upset on the statewide stage.
The Cook Political Report shifted its race ratings from “solid” to “lean Republican” after Peltola’s entrance. The Democrats’ fair chances in a state President Donald Trump carried by 14 points in 2024 create a major headache for Republicans, who are on the defensive in the 2026 midterm elections.
