Sadiq Khan responds to Trump dig that he’s a ‘disaster’

London Mayor Sadiq Khan responded to criticism from President Donald Trump by pointing to the Square Mile’s strong global rankings.

Trump issued a new litany of critiques at Khan during a 45-minute conversation with Politico’s The Conversation, reiterating the attacks he first leveled against the London mayor in his United Nations speech in September.

“If you take a look at London, you have a mayor named Khan. He’s a horrible mayor. He’s an incompetent mayor, but he’s a horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor,” Trump said. “He’s done a terrible job. London’s a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see it happen.”

“The mayor of London — he’s a disaster. He’s a disaster. He’s got a totally different ideology of what he’s supposed to have,” Trump added. “I hate what’s happened to London.”

Khan appeared to lump Trump in with his “haters” in an X post that did not explicitly mention the president. Instead, he highlighted a string of accolades for London. In the post, London is listed as the best city in the world, the top travel destination in the world, the world capital of music, No. 1 in nightlife for Europe, and the most prosperous city, among other accolades, citing sources such as Ipsos and TripAdvisor.

The last time Trump bad-mouthed Khan, Khan retorted by accusing Trump of being “racist,” “sexist,” “misogynistic,” and “Islamophobic.”

Khan is the first mayor of London to win three terms, being reelected last year. Ever since Trump’s first term, Khan has publicly opposed Trump’s policies, notably the president’s travel ban during his first term, which largely affected Muslim countries. This renewed spat comes as Trump is gearing up to enact a new travel ban against as many as 30 countries.
