White House’s X post hit with community note for Thanksgiving gas price claim

.

The White House received a community note on X regarding a post it made regarding gas prices, clarifying that gas prices aren’t as low as it claimed.

The X post on Sunday shared an article on the price of gas ahead of Thanksgiving week, including the caption that travelers are hitting the road “with the LOWEST holiday gas prices since the pandemic.” However, a community note attached to the post said that national average gas prices are higher than they were a year ago, citing information from the American Automobile Association.

As of Monday morning, the community note is no longer present.

The current national average gas price as of Monday is $3.069, up slightly from the price of $3.056 a year ago. On Nov. 23, 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic began, the national average price for gas was $2.10 per gallon.

Patrick De Haan, the head of GasBuddy’s petroleum analysis, reposted the White House’s claim on Monday and said GasBuddy predicts the national average gas price will be $3.02 per gallon on Thanksgiving Day, “the same it was last year.”

Community notes on X allow users to provide additional context to posts, and will start to show once enough contributors rate proposed notes as “helpful.” However, if enough contributors label proposed notes as “not helpful,” they won’t be shown.

The status of notes being shown is updated as new ratings are added, meaning notes may show up for some time before disappearing. Statuses are eventually locked after two weeks.

Proposed community notes on the White House’s post include the aforementioned note citing AAA data, as well as data from Lending Tree saying the average U.S. gas price on Nov. 18 was $3.08, “a mere 0.2% increase from last year.”

Another proposed note, pulling from Trading Economics, says that gas prices are lower, as “retail prices are slightly higher than last year due to other factors such as taxes and expenses.” Yet another proposed note says gas is cheaper this year “if you consider inflation.”
