Crypto lawyer with affordability-focused message challenges Letitia James for New York attorney general

New York City public attorney Khurram Dara on Thursday announced his run for attorney general against incumbent Letitia James.

Dara is running as a Republican, setting up a primary fight with 2022 Republican attorney general candidate Michael Henry, a favorite among Republican officials in New York. The crypto attorney hopes to emerge on top with a message of law and order, improving the business climate, and, most prominently, tackling affordability.

“For the last few months, I’ve been traveling all over the state. No matter where you go, everyone says the same thing: New York is too expensive. And it’s more than just the financial cost. It’s the cost to your peace of mind when it comes to your safety and the safety of your loved ones. An Attorney General can fix this. But not the one we have now,” he said in a statement.

“Letitia James has been a professional politician for over twenty years and throughout her career she has consistently put her own political interests ahead of New Yorkers,” Dara added. “I’m running for New York State Attorney General because the people of New York deserve an AG that puts New Yorkers first, not one consumed by her own political ambitions.”

Dara’s approach to lowering the cost of living in New York differs substantially from that of others in the city who have taken on the matter, especially socialist New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Aside from his work in crypto, Dara has distinguished himself in conservative circles. He’s made videos for the conservative educational website PragerU, talking about Muslim radicalization from the perspective of a devout Sunni Muslim American.

He’s also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the pro-market legal nonprofit organization Advisory Board of the Investor Choice Advocates Network.
