Dick Cheney’s funeral date announced: What to know

.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral in the nation’s capital on Nov. 20 at 11 a.m.

The Lincoln, Nebraska, native died on Nov. 3 in Wyoming while in retirement and surrounded by family after having suffered from pneumonia, cardiac, and vascular disease-related complications at the age of 84. Cheney is survived by his wife, Lynn, and two daughters, Liz and Mary.

While it is unclear if Cheney’s casket would lie at the Capitol Rotunda in the U.S. Capitol prior to his funeral service, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Republican leadership staff were reviewing the “protocol” for the former vice president to lie in state.

“I think we’re checking the protocols on that. I’ll let you know soon,” Thune told reporters after Cheney’s death last Tuesday.

If he were to lie in state, Cheney would follow other prominent Republicans — including Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in 2018 and the longest serving Republican in U.S. House History, Alaska Rep. Don Young, in 2022 — to have a state funeral following their deaths.

Cheney left behind a lasting legacy as he played a vital role in the 2003 push for the U.S. invasion of Iraq during his tenure under former President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009.
