Letitia James to headline Mamdani rally in New York mayoral race

Recently indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James will headline a rally for New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani on Monday night.

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia indicted James, who has long clashed with President Donald Trump, on a bank fraud charge on Thursday. Monday night’s rally in the Washington Heights neighborhood will be James’s first public appearance since the news of her indictment broke last week, according to the New York Times.

Along with James, Mamdani’s “Our Time Will Come” rally will feature Reps. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), New York City Councilman Chi Ossé, state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, and New York Liberty guard Natasha Cloud.

The indictment led to a fallout of “Hands OFF Tish James” rallies held by the New York Working Families Party over the weekend, as James’s supporters gathered to criticize the indictment as politically motivated by the Trump administration.

James, a fierce critic of Trump, has brought several cases against the president in the past, including a civil fraud case against him and the Trump Organization in 2022. Trump urged Attorney General Pam Bondi in a Truth Social post to look into James and several other of his political enemies, including former FBI Director James Comey and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA). A federal grand jury also indicted Comey at the end of September.

Bondi has denied that the indictments were politically motivated, instead pointing to the end of the “weaponization” of the Justice Department under the Trump administration.

Mamdani spoke at the “Hands OFF Tish James” rally, calling the indictment “a blatant miscarriage of justice” and a “shameless act of political retribution.”

“The prosecution of Tish James is the product of a broken system that allows lawless billionaires to rule alongside corrupt politicians,” Mamdani wrote in an Instagram post. “It’s not just a story of Washington, D.C. but New York City too. That system gave rise to Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo.”

James endorsed Mamdani earlier this year. Following Mayor Eric Adams’s abandonment of his bid for reelection in September, the race is down to three candidates: Mamdani, third-party candidate and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani defeated Cuomo 56.4%-43.6% in the final round of the Democratic primary.

Mamdani’s campaign and James’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner‘s requests for comment.
