AT&T agreed to a $177 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit regarding two data breaches last year. Customers who believe their data was targeted in the company’s March or July 2024 breach could be eligible for up to $7,500 in claims, which must be filed by Nov. 18, 2025.
The Dallas-based telecommunications company announced two separate private consumer data breaches in 2024 — one on March 30 and another on July 12. Customers’ names, email and home addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, account passcodes, and billing numbers may have been released to the dark web during the March breach, according to the settlement.
In the July breach, customers’ current and former telephone numbers, the phone numbers they have interacted with, and the frequency and duration of those interactions may have been released to the dark web.
Plaintiff Alex Petroski of the class-action lawsuit originally filed his complaint against AT&T “for its failure to properly secure and safeguard sensitive information of its customers” on March 30, 2024, according to court documents. Three days later, 12 plaintiffs with similar complaints centralized into the class-action lawsuit “IN RE: AT&T Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation”, assigned to Trump-appointed Judge Ada E. Brown in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
AT&T customers in the United States whose data elements were included in the March breach or AT&T account owners, as well as line or end users, whose data elements were included in the July breach qualify for the settlement.
Customers affected by the March data breach can qualify for up to $5,000 for their documented losses or a tiered cash payment. Those affected by the July breach can qualify for up to $2,500 for their documented losses or a tiered cash payment.
