The Justice Department has published a list of cities, counties, and states that identify as “sanctuary” zones or places where law enforcement will not turn over illegal immigrants to federal immigration authorities.
The DOJ on Tuesday highlighted the top jurisdictions on the Trump administration’s radar, including 13 states, four counties, and 18 cities. One state may include dozens to hundreds of cities that are marked as sanctuary zones because of the state policy.
The Trump administration issued a sharp warning to the sanctuary jurisdictions, threatening further lawsuits from places that release suspected or convicted criminal illegal immigrants back onto the streets rather than transfer them to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in late April that stated it was “imperative that the Federal Government restore the enforcement of United States law” in light of how sanctuary jurisdictions were using their “authority to violate, obstruct, and defy the enforcement of Federal Immigration laws.”

The Trump administration has filed several lawsuits against sanctuary zones, including one in July against New York City. One such lawsuit filed against Louisville, Kentucky, led the mayor to revoke the city’s sanctuary policy and begin cooperating with ICE.
The April executive order also directed the DHS to work with the DOJ to publish a list of sanctuary cities, counties, and states that refuse to work with the federal government. The full list is below.
