A new Gallup Poll revealed that national pride has largely decreased among younger generations, a trend that is increasingly aligned with Democrats losing patriotism.
Only 41% of Generation Z said they are “extremely” or “very proud” to be American, as patriotism has drastically decreased between each generation. However, Democrats were less likely to be proud to be American in every generation.
Republican pride started slipping with millennials, with the percentage being in the high 80s since 2001. Now, only 64% of Gen Z Republicans said they are “extremely” or “very proud.”
Meanwhile, Democrats have dropped about 10 percentage points with each new generation. Gen Z Democrats dropped even further than the typical jump, with only 24% of Gen Z Democrats saying they are “extremely” or “very proud” to be American.
According to the poll, national pride was at an all-time high after the Sept. 11 attacks, with 90% of all Americans feeling this height of pride. However, the statistic dropped to 75% by 2011.
National pride among Democrats and independents across generations is at an all-time low, with 36% and 53%, respectively, saying they feel a high sense of pride for the country. Republican pride increased from last year and has largely remained at a steady high, with 92% saying they feel high pride this year.
More Gen Z Democrats said they have “little” or “no pride” than the group that said they have high pride, with 32% saying they have no pride. Pride among Americans fell under both the Trump and Biden administrations, and hasn’t recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gallup said some of the top reasons respondents cited for losing pride in the United States are ideological divides between parties, pessimism toward economic prospects, and an unfavorable image of both parties.
